CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

DS TONY SMITH

A strong sense of justice was Tony’s main reason for joining the force and he is quite often disappointed by the amount of corruption and quantity of ‘bent’ coppers there are that make it hard for the straight ones like himself to do their job. It is hard not to get involved with those people. Saying no to them makes you a target and there are many times he has wanted to resign and walk away.

But something makes him stay. Like his Pappa always said, he is stubborn as a mule, that boy. He doesn’t want to give up all the hard work he’s gone through to become a detective because of the rotten apples in the cart. There are still enough good ones struggling to do the job well, him being one of them.

For example, DI Pollitt. Now she is a woman he looks up to. She’s good at her job and works her arse off to do things the right way and he is determined to help her all the way. And this one they have here in the car today, they’re going to get him, for sure. As he drives into the station car park a shiver of excitement runs through him. They have caught The Keeper. They have got him with them right now and he is going to prison for the rest of his rotten life.

Marco Rossi

It is about ten past nine when Tony Smith and Ed Freeman each holding one of Rossi’s arms, lead the cuffed prisoner, still trembling and head hanging, and walk him into Southwark police station where they take him to the custody reception desk. There they wait unspeaking.

The custody sergeant sighs as he looks at Marco, takes a form from a shelf, grabs a plastic bag and a ballpoint pen and without so much as glancing at the man, a definite air of boredom in his voice, takes his details.

It is only now that Marco is read his rights and told he can speak to a legal representative of his own choice or use the police duty solicitor scheme, free if he has none of his own.

Marco’s body starts to shake with sobs. He wants to tell them that he usually calls his mother in Italy every Saturday. He’ll have to get a solicitor who can call her and tell her he is there for some traffic misdemeanour or something. This is when he asks for a solicitor through the police. And this is when they stall calling one.

DI Jo Pollitt

Careful to wear latex gloves, in my office I check Rossi’s tape is rewound to the beginning and press play. A crackling sound emerges but nothing more. This continues for twenty minutes until the tape ends. Disappointed, I turn it over and play the other side. Same again. A blank tape. I’ve wasted a frustrating forty minutes listening to zilch. The man must have hidden some others somewhere in his flat. Along with the trophies? They will have to pull the place apart and try to find them.
